Eaton's of Canada Catalog/Department Store

Timothy Eaton immigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1854. Two years later he and his brother open a small store in St. Mary's, near Stratford, Ontario. He opened his Yonge Street store in downtown Toronto in 1869.

The Eaton Company issued its first catalog in 1884. This company was Canada's equivalent to our Montgomery Wards, JC Penny and Sears.

Timothy Eaton dies in 1907 and the company passes to his son John Craig Eaton. In 1922 Robert Young Eaton assumes control of company.

We believe the Eaton Company first introduced outboard motors in 1933 to their catalog and department stores. Their house brand name, was "Viking" and were made by many different outboard manufacturers. They were sold in to the late 60's.

Eaton's catalog business was discontinued in 1976. The next year they open a shopping center and office complex in downtown Toronto.

The late 80's and through the 90's found Eaton's of Canada going down hill. Falling sales brought cut backs and layoffs. 1997 through 1998 saw George Eaton replaced as CEO and Chairman of the Board. Eaton's goes public in 1998, with the Eaton family still holding 51 percent.

1999 sees more layoffs, store closings and company put up for sale on May 18, 1999. Liquidation sales begin in all stores in August 25, 1999.

September 20, 1999 Sears Canada announces intentions to acquire all shares of T. Eaton Company. The deal includes 8 stores with and option to purchase 5 more. Sears Canada is also purchasing the Eaton's name, trademarks, brands and Web site. Deal is valued at 50 million dollars.

Sears attempted to reopen an up-scaled Eaton's, as a high-end retailer in 2000. The Eaton name comes to an end, when Sears announces its decision to drop the Eaton brand and merge competing stores in the same shopping centers. The date is February 18, 2002.

Hard core parts for these outboards are getting more difficult to find as time goes on. Many older outboards used common Ignition and Carburetor venders for that period. Discount Marine Parts has Ignition and Carburetor repair kits for most all of these older outboards. If we don't have what your looking for, we have many sources to locate your part. Obviously some parts are just not available. We can sometimes find it used and often we have the part made if there is enough demand. Discount Marine Parts has a large inventory of parts for most brands of American made Outboards, Inboards and Sterndrives. We also have most parts and service manuals available.
