The history of the old Kissel Auto Company plant in Hartford, Wisconsin picks up in 1944.In 1944 West Bend Aluminum Company purchased Kissel Industries and the Sears and Roebucks contract to make outboards. The only outboard production during the War Years was for government agencies. In 1946 West Bend Outboard manufactured their first motor for Sears. It was in this year that Sears and Roebucks changed their outboard motor brand name to "Elgin".
Up until 1948, West Bend sold outboard motors exclusively to Sears. In 1948 they started marketing outboards under their West Bend name in foreign countries. It wasn't until 1955 that West Bend started to sell their outboard motor in the domestic market.
We believe the rift with Sears started here and by late 1959, West Bend was to longer the exclusive manufacturer for Sears. McCulloch became the primary manufacturer for the Elgin Outboard. McCulloch bought Scott-Atwater in 1956, but marketed under the Scott-Atwater brand until 1964.
In January of 1965 Chrysler bought the entire plant and outboard operation. In 1965 the outboard hoods said "West Bend by Chrysler". In the following year West Bend was phased out and the outboard carried the "Chrysler" name.
This ends the West Bend brand name and the history of the Hartford, Wisconsin outboard production picks up with Chrysler.

Hard core parts for these outboards are getting more difficult to find as time goes on. Many older outboards used common Ignition and Carburetor venders for that period.
