Martin Outboard was unique in many ways. It had some new features, to outboard motors of it's time. The newest innovation was the use of "Poppet Valves" instead of the normal reed valves.The story of the Martin Outboard started with a very young George Martin of Indiana. After racing, building and rebuilding outboard motors for over 25 years. He decided to put some of his new ideas to the test. In three years he had a working outboard of his own design.
It was now time to find a manufacturer. Mr.Martin approached National Pressure Cooker Company of Eau Clair, Wisconsin. In 1943 he demonstrated his motor for officials of that company and the "Martin Motor" Division was born. A production plant was located and the first Martin was produced 6 months later.
Sales and full production didn't really start until the end of World War II. The Martin Outboard was manufactured from 1946 - 1954. Mr.Martin left the Martin Motor Company in the late 40's. In 1952 he took the chief engineering position at Scott Atwater Outboard Motor Company. In 1953 Mr.Martin canceled the licensing agreement with the National Pressure Cooker Company for non-payment. With the poor economy of the time and loosing the patent rights from Mr.Martin. The Martin Motor plant closed it's doors in 1954.
Unlike so many other outboard manufacturers that were resurrected to live again under another name, The Martin Outboard ended there.
Hard core parts for these outboards are getting more difficult to find as time goes on. Many older outboards used common Ignition and Carburetor venders for that period.
